Franchise stores and independent lots

In general terms, a franchise store sells a brand new and takes trades of all kinds. That is why a Honda rooftop can have a Chevy on the used row, and why a Ford store can have a Toyota that came in last week. The used line is a mix of off-lease, trade, and whatever the desk thought it could retail. Independent lots vary widely: some are small and specialized, some are large mixed rows, some sit next to a body shop. None of that is a grade. It is a reminder to know who you will call in two months if a sensor light comes on.

Planning a multi-town Saturday

Pick two or three cards, not twelve. Put them on a map in your head: river crossing to East Peoria, south toward Pekin, east toward Morton and Washington, or a longer run to Canton or the Woodford County towns. Confirm each car is still there before you leave the driveway. A directory card is a recent snapshot. A desk can sell a car at 10 a.m.

Sister stores and the same VIN twice

Some local dealer groups share a website platform across more than one rooftop. The same physical vehicle — one VIN — can be published on two sister sites even though it only sits on one line. Call ahead anyway. Ask whether the car is still available, whether it is on site, and whether you can take it for an independent inspection. That phone call is cheaper than a drive to the wrong lot in the rain.

If you are lining up a truck in East Peoria and a crossover in Morton, use the type pages — trucks, SUVs, cars — so you are not mixing jobs on the same Saturday. A bed and a third row are different errands. So is a cheap commuter on under $20,000. The directory will not stop you from stacking an impossible day. Your calendar should.

When two rooftops in the same town both have a car you like, see the one you can reach twice. Paperwork often takes a second trip. A store you will actually return to beats a slightly lower windshield number in a town you will resent driving to in February. That is not a ranking of dealers. It is a ranking of your time.
